University of Greenwich MPhil/PhD Studentship in Economics

Title: MPhil/PhD Studentship in Economics ‐ The causes of falling wage share and prospects for
growth with equality in a globalized economy

Duration: 3 years

Description: “The causes of falling wage share and prospects for growth with equality in a globalized
economy” is a research project funded by the Institute of New Economic Thinking. The successful
candidate is expected to work as a Research Assistant during September 2014‐September 2017
under the supervision of the project director, Professor Ozlem Onaran. The output of the project will
be part of the candidate’s PhD dissertation. The aim of the project is to analyse the determinants of
the share of wages in national income, and to contribute to the theory of distribution combining
insights from political economy, institutional economics, and industrial relations. Empirically, the
project will estimate the effects of both firm‐ and sector‐specific factors and macroeconomic factors,
and decompose the effects of technological change, globalisation, labour market institutions,
financialisation, changes in the composition of government spending, rise in personal income
inequality, and market concentration. Country specific estimations will be performed for selected
developed and developing countries to cover different industrial relations, welfare and social
security regimes. Both industry and firm level panel data will be used. A final aim is to discuss the
policy implications of the results for egalitarian development strategies in a globalized economy.
We seek candidates, who have a comparative and pluralistic approach to the theoretical debates
among the different schools of thought. Heterodox approaches are welcome. Applicants with
familiarity with econometric research methods will have a priority.

The successful candidate will work together with other researchers at the Work and Employment
Research Unit (WERU), and will be expected to contribute to the dissemination of research findings,
and co‐author high quality publications.

The successful candidate will receive a £13590 bursary (years 2 and 3 linked to RCUK
Doctoral Stipend rate) plus a contribution towards tuition fees of up to the equivalent of the
Home/EU fee (currently £3885 pa), subject to performance.
