Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Scholarship at Curtin University in Australia in 2017

A PhD stipend through Curtin University under Dr Matthew Albrecht is available for a student interested in conducting research on animal models of psychiatric disorders. Specifically, the project involves behavioural and electrophysiological assessment of developmental models of schizophrenia. The interaction of the model with other developmental, behavioural, pharmacological or therapeutic interventions will also be investigated. While the project's inception is schizophrenia focussed, the model has relevance for a range of psychiatric disorders including autism, ageing disorders, and mood disorders. A range of opportunities exist for the successful applicant, including possible travel to the US to work with collaborators there.

PhD Scholarship in energy storage materials for concentrating solar thermal power in Australia in 2017

This Research-only PhD is directed towards developing high temperature materials that store thermochemical energy for large-scale solar thermal plants so they can operate 24/7. Metal hydrides can store up to 20 times more thermal energy than current generation molten salt technology. New materials will be synthesised by mechanochemical, gas-solid, and wet-chemical methods. The thermochemical properties of these materials (i.e. enthalpy and entropy) will be determined and they will be tested in new prototype test facilities for gas-solid reactions during thermal cycling, simulating a full-scale solar facility. The technology will be directed towards up-scaling to realise multi-kg test beds. The PhD will be conducted within the Fuels and Energy Technology Institute (FETI) at Curtin University, which is equipped with an array of world-class research equipment and facilities. You will specialise in materials chemistry, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and other characterisation techniques. A 6-month visit to an overseas laboratory will be strongly encouraged during the PhD.

PhD Scholarship in solid-state ion conductors for next-generation batteries

This Research-only PhD is directed towards designing, synthesising, and characterising new ionic conductors to be used as solid-state electrolytes in next-generation batteries. New boron-based inorganic compounds will be synthesised by wet-chemical approaches under inert gas conditions (Schlenk techniques). i.e. MgB10H10 and ZnB12H12. The materials will be characterised to determine their crystal structure, material properties, and ion conductivity.
