Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) PhD Research Fellowship in Fluid flow in Sedimentary Basins and Eruptive Systems

A position as PhD Research fellow (SKO 1017) in Fluid flow in sedimentary basins and eruptive systems, is available at the Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED), a Centre of Excellence at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, Norway.

Starting date: no later than 1 October 2016. Note that one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years with no compulsory work, or for a period of 4 years with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the department), contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department

Job and project description:
The spectacular Lusi eruption started in NE Java, Indonesia on the 29th of May 2006 after aM6.3 earthquake struck near Yogyakarta. Initially, several gas and mud eruption sites appeared along the reactivated strike-slip Watukosek fault system and within weeks several villages were submerged by boiling mud. The most prominent eruption site was named Lusi. Lusi is possibly the youngest sedimentary-hosted hydrothermal system on Earth and is located a few kilometres to the NE of the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex in a region with high geothermal gradient. To date Lusi is still active and erupts gas, water, mud and rock fragments. Gas and water data show that the plumbing system of Lusi is connected with the neighbouring Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex.

The proposed study will be part of the LUSI LAB project that aims to complete a multidisciplinary study at the ongoing eruption site and the neighbouring volcanic complex. The main goal for the PhD candidate will be to investigate the interaction ongoing between the Lusi active system, the connected volcanic complex and the effects that the frequent seismicity has on the erupted fluids. Lithological studies will be done on the erupted material. Particular emphasis will be devoted to the geochemical study of the fluids erupted at Lusi site and the surrounding hydrothermal vents in the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex in order to investigate:
a) the geochemical processes and reactions ongoing in the active feeder channel,
b) the origin of the fluids, and
c) how the frequent seismicity affects the geochemistry of the rising fluids.
The Lusi fluids will be compared with those released at other piercement structures present in the Java Island and the strike-slip fault zone will be investigated to highlight the palaeo seepage of fluids along this preferential pathway. Ultimately we aim to explore the newly formed depositional system at the Porong delta river. Here are currently deposited huge amounts of gas-saturated mud after being erupted from the Lusi crater.

Required qualifications:
The successful candidate must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent and have a good knowledge of geochemistry of fluids, hydrothermal systems, mud volcanism, fault systems and sedimentary basins.

General requirements:
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June 2016 to complete the final exam.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
A good command of English is required.
