Masterate Scholarships and Masterate Scholarships for Maori Students are offered for the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research at Massey University. The number of Masterate Scholarships awarded each year is discretionary and will be contingent on available funding. Up to two Masterate Scholarships for Maori Students will be awarded each year.
Eligibility
The scholarships are open to persons who are enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time for the thesis research component of their Masters degree at Massey University. The research component must be 90 - 120 credits (this may comprise two research papers studied in consecutive semesters that constitute a single project overall). A full-time candidate will be expected to work 40 – 50 hours per week on their Masterate qualification. Part-time applicants are not eligible.
Consideration will normally only be given to students with a GPA of 7.5 or better (on a 9 point scale). This is above an average grade of A-.
International Fees
Applicants liable for international tuition fees must obtain additional funding to pay the international fees. The international rates for tuition fees are currently between NZ$24,000 and NZ$38,000 per annum, depending on the programme undertaken.
Term
Every scholarship shall be tenable at Massey University for a maximum period of 12 months devoted to full-time research.
Tenure
The tenure of every Masterate Scholarship shall commence either by 1 April (December round) or by 1 September (July round). No deferrals beyond these dates are permitted. (Those applying in the 1 October round must be due to start their thesis at the beginning of the following year, those applying for the 1 July round must have started their thesis at the beginning of that year or are due to start their thesis mid year.)
Programme of Research
Except as otherwise provided in these regulations, every applicant shall, during the tenure of the scholarship, be enrolled as a full-time student of Massey University and shall pursue at Massey University an approved programme of research approved by the relevant Massey University College Academic Director for the Master's degree.
Overseas Study
Applicants intending to pursue part of the approved programme of research at a university or other approved institution overseas are required to inform the Scholarships Committee in writing of the intended overseas study period, with a statement of support for this plan by their supervisor. Payments to applicants who proceed overseas will be made in New Zealand currency into a New Zealand bank account.
Value
The value of the Masterate Scholarship and Masterate Scholarship for Maori Students shall be $15,000. The Scholarships Committee may reduce the value or amend the terms and conditions of a scholarship to meet the circumstances of individual applicants.
Payments
Payments will be made in four equal instalments in April, June, August and October, provided that enrolment is approved and Massey University has confirmed attendance by the applicant. Payments for applicants commencing their research in semester two will be made in August (on confirmation of enrolment), October, April (on confirmation of re-enrolment) and June.

Applications must be received by the Scholarships Office, Research and Enterprise by:
01 July to commence tenure by 1 September in the current year, or
