PhD Position in the Interdisciplinary Area of Computer, Library and Information Science, Norway

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design currently has an opening for a PhD position at the Department of Computer Science within Computer, Library and Information Science.


The PhD project should be relevant to the field of Library and Information Science, but with a Computer Science focus. The project is expected to focus on issues of universal design and accessibility of information and communication technology. It is expected that the project will make use of approaches, techniques and methods from supporting fields such as Human-Computer Interaction, Text Mining, or other relevant fields that lie at the crossroads between Library and Information Science and Computer Science.

Required qualifications
Candidates should have:
  • A bachelor and master education within Computer Science, Informatics, Library and Information Science, Digital Library, or equivalent (Applications from candidates who are currently enrolled in a Master’s programme due to graduate in June/July 2013 are also accepted),
  • Excellent written and oral academic English.
Desired skills
Depending on the topic chosen for the thesis, one or more of the following will be required:
  • A good command of statistical analysis and/or mathematical modeling,
  • Methods within Human-Computer Interaction,
  • Good programming skills.
 Desired characteristics
  • Ability to work independently and goal-oriented,
  • Ability to generate and pursue novel research ideas,
  • Good collaboration skills,
  • Good communication skills,
  • Organized,
  • Efficiency and ability to execute work in a timely manner.

Evaluation of applications
As an applicant you will be assessed by an expert committee. In addition to the online application, you must within the set date of application submit four sets of paper copies of:
  • Application
  • CV (summarizing education, employments within or outside of academia
  • Transcripts of diplomas/certificates. (Candidates who are currently enrolled in a Master’s programme due to graduate in June/July 2013 need to send a copy of their Master’s degree within July 31st).
  • Master’s thesis and other scientific work you want the expert committee to assess, in addition to a list of your publications.
  • Names, email and telephone number of 2-3 referees (describe relation to applicant)
  • Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University's grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.
At a later stage, qualified applicants will be asked to hand in a written project description/proposal.
