The department of Human Geography, Stockholm University, announces one doctoral position in Human Geography, with specialization in Global Urbanism (Focus Africa) – see presentation below.

The doctoral candidate will be enrolled at the Stockholm University School of International Studies (SIS), which will start in the Autumn term of 2013. The SIS is a joint postgraduate initiative created by five departments at Stockholm University: Department of Economic History/International Relations, Department of Political Science, Department of Human Geography, Department of Media Studies and the Faculty of Law. The purpose of SIS is to combine research strengths, offer a broader curriculum, enhance multidisciplinary research, and increase the international profile of Stockholm University and its students in the field of international studies. The doctoral candidate will participate in SIS-sponsored courses, attend SIS-organized seminars and benefit from the international networks of SIS more generally.

The PhD candidate will be based at the Department of Human Geography. He/she will be part of the department’s research profile The Stockholm Urban and Regional Research Environment and of its sub-group The Urban Africa Group.

The department has a long tradition of both urban studies and research on Africa and has broad international networks in these fields. The PhD candidate is expected to actively participate in this research environment.

General conditions
The PhD training programme encompasses 240 course-points (4 years), including a doctoral thesis (150 points) and courses/literature studies (90 points in total). The thesis can take the form of a monography or of a collection of journal articles, in English. The doctoral position will include periods of fieldwork in an urban location in Africa.

Enrolled doctoral students are expected to assume their education full-time. The initial contract of employment shall be for one year, and can subsequently be renewed. The duration of employment will correspond to 48 months (four years) of full-time employment, with eventual prolongation to accommodate for a share of teaching and other duties at the department. Enrolled PhD students are expected to participate in research proposals for external funding.

The PhD candidate should be prepared to assume his/her position on 1 September 2013. The minimum monthly salary is currently 23 200 SEK.

Who is eligible to apply?
The applicant is required to fulfil the general eligibility requirement for PhD studies: an academic degree at the Second Level (a master or ”magister” exam), or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way, in Sweden or elsewhere. Additionally, the applicant should fulfil the special eligibility requirement (”särskild behörighet”), i.e. to have achieved pass grades in at least 60 course points in higher education in the discipline of human geography / geography or in an equivalent discipline (e.g. development studies, etc).

Assessment criteria
Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
  • the applicant’s documented academic knowledge and skills of special relevance to the specific research field for the doctoral position - Global Urbanism (Focus Africa), presented below.
  • knowledge of scientific theory and methods of relevance to the specific research field for the doctoral position (e.g. interview based fieldwork in urban Africa or comparable environment)
  • academic skill as demonstrated by the candidate’s previous scientific work (report, paper or degree project thesis), including analytical and writing abilities.
  • good communication and cooperation skills
  • the applicant’s potential to contribute to and utilise the research environment at the department
  • the applicants personal references
  • good skills in English

The application must include the following documentation:
  • Curriculum Vitae (including authored publications, larger essays, and relevant experience)
  • A short (1-2 pages) personal presentation (letter of intent) explaining why you are interested in the thematic area outlined in this announcement and your skills, competences and experience of relevance for that thematic area.
  • Verified copies of education certificates supporting general and special admission requirements to the PhD student programme
  • One exemplar of the applicant’s independently written essays (masters and bachelor theses) within the framework of his/her bachelor or masters level university education (if no thesis or paper is submitted your application will not be evaluated)
  • Two recommendation lettres from university lecturers or professors (with phone numbers and email addresses) who have taught the applicant and who have a good knowledge of the applicant’s academic achievements
  • Ancillary documentation that the applicant wishes to be taken into consideration (e.g. other reference letters).

If the applicant has not completed his/her Master education by the date of application, he/she can send the remaining documents at the latest 21 June 2013.
