Post-doctoral position in ultrafast laser science and nonlinear optics

The Attoscience and ultrafast optics research group at ICFO, led by Prof. Dr. Jens Biegert, is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work on ultrafast laser science and nonlinear optics. The candidate will conduct research in a small team, hence coordination of scientific work and project leadership is required.

Project description
The tasks associated with the position entail the investigation of concepts for the generation of CEP-stable high-power and single-cycle pulses at long wavelengths for applications in attosecond X-Ray science and extreme laser-matter interaction. The work will include the operation of the source and the development of novel concepts for power and pulse duration scaling, metrology at extreme conditions, and the investigation of pulse formation and nonlinear interaction. A important aspect will be the application to experiments especially in HHG and related investigations. Success of the project will have impact across the fields of attoscience, ultrafast laser physics and nonlinear optics with strong potential for high scientific output as well as industrial collaboration.

The candidate will join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics group, led by Prof. Jens Biegert, which consists of a highly motivated and dynamic team of scientists with state-of-the-art laboratories. Our experimental environment includes several unique and cutting edge few-cycle intense-light sources, with special emphasis on wavelengths in the mid-IR and CEP stability. We are embedded in several prominent national, European and international networks and collaborations which ensures a vibrant and stimulating research environment. Our general research is concerned with a variety of topics ranging from ultrafast laser physics to extreme nonlinear optics and strong field atomic and molecular physics.

Requirements and Conditions
Candidates must hold an internationally-recognized Ph.D.-equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the nearest future) in a relevant field, prior to taking up the position.
We are seeking enthusiastic candidates with:

  • demonstrated experience in ultrafast pulse generation, nonlinear optics and metrology,
  • knowledge in laser physics, the aspects of pulse formation and compression of few-cycle pulses, and concepts to measure pulses,
  • experience with optical simulation and ray tracing is beneficial.

We expect excellent skills in English (written and spoken) and participation in project leadership as well as the ability to work in, or lead, a team of people. Diligent work ethic as well as a strong desire for problem solving and team work is essential.
No restrictions of citizenship apply to the ICFO positions. Female scientists are encouraged to apply. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Salaries will be commensurate with the experience of the candidates.

Application process
To apply, suitable candidates are requested to submit (in English) the following material:

  • A Cover/Presentation letter with a declaration of interest, outlining past research achievements and a description of future research aspirations,
  • A Curriculum Vitae with research publications, as well as your contact details,
  • Via the online application form, the candidate should indicate two referees, who we will contact for their reference letters if necessary.
Candidates should be willing to be contacted by phone during the selection process.
Candidates may contact ICFO HR and Education (jobs@icfo.eu) for informal inquiries regarding the application procedure. Informal (project-related) inquiries may be addressed to Prof. Dr. Jens Biegert (jens.biegert@icfo.eu).
The call will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified.

Deadline
31st of October, 2017
