The University of Waikato has six flagship Research Institutes which are offering doctoral and masters scholarships.
The doctoral scholarships are worth $22,000 a year, plus fees. They cover three years’ full-time study and are open to applications from international and domestic students. The masters scholarships are open to domestic students only and are worth $12,000, which includes a fees component of $3,500.
Environmental Research Institute (ERI) Scholarships
ERI researchers investigate environmental issues across a range of ecosystems to support effective environmental outcomes.
These doctoral and masters scholarships are for students intending to research aspects of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal marine or Antarctic ecosystems.
Institute for Business Research (IBR) Scholarships
IBR researchers study aspects of business and leadership to enhance New Zealand’s economic, social and cultural development.
These doctoral and masters scholarships will be awarded to applicants who are keen to investigate the potential for the small business sector to contribute a sustainable increase to New Zealand’s national income.
National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) Scholarships
NIDEA has a virtual and evolving community of national and international researchers who study and help inform policy responses to the demographic, social and economic processes that interact to shape New Zealand’s future.
The doctoral scholarship comes under NIDEA’s Indigenous Future Programme and is for a student to research opportunities and challenges around Maori and indigenous demographic change. The masters scholarship will be awarded to a student to investigate the regional impacts of demographic change for New Zealand’s communities.
Institute of Professional Learning (IPL) Scholarships
IPL provides professional learning and development in the broad field of education, and works in partnership with iwi and other education providers to deliver professional development programmes both nationally and internationally.
These doctoral and masters scholarships are for students to investigate and contribute to improving professional learning and development in New Zealand early childhood centres, kura and schools.
Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) Scholarships
TKRI works with iwi, drawing on matauranga Māori and multi-disciplines to create new knowledge and innovation that will lead to the wellbeing of whānau and society.
These doctoral and masters scholarships are for students planning research into at least one of the following themes: economic development and intergenerational sustainability, environment and iwi wellbeing, solving complex social challenges, language and cultural identity, leadership kaitaikitanga and rangatiratanga.
Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER) Scholarships
WMIER research covers the broad field of education, from early childhood through to the tertiary sector; focussing on learning, teaching, curriculum, cultural and literacy issues and education policy.
The doctoral scholarship will be awarded to a student to investigate how key competencies, as set out in the NZ curriculum, are fostered, evidenced and traced over time, places and tasks in early years and compulsory schooling. The masters scholarship will be awarded to a student to investigate curriculum, assessment and/or policy implementation in the early years, compulsory schooling and tertiary sectors.
